Consultations

Our current consultation times are 9am-12pm and 2pm-5.30pm
Monday to Friday
and 9.30am-12pm on a Saturday.We can get quite booked up so booking in advance is recommended for routine appointments. We try and keep a few appointments free for on the day booking for more immediate problems and in an emergency we will always fit you in.

We offer a full vaccination and booster service for dogs, cats and rabbits. We keep up to date with emerging diseases and make sure our recommended vaccines are the best available.
During routine appointments we can offer advice on diet and nutrition, worm and flea treatments, micro-chipping, neutering, behavioural 'first aid' and any other concerns you may have about your pet’s health.

Animal Health Certificates (AHC's) and Pet Travel
Following our departure from the EU the Pet Passport is no longer valid for travel. You now need to obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) each time you travel within the EU. Both Patrick and Harriet are government licensed to issue an AHC if you and your pet plan to travel or live abroad. We are also able to provide certificates for export.
Rabies vaccinations need to be given a minimum of 21 days before travel and the AHC needs to be issued no more than 10 days before departure.

If you have any queries or would like to make an appointment to discuss travelling abroad with your pet, please get in touch. At peak times demand for this service may be very high, so where possible please book well in advance of travel.

Microchipping is now a legal requirement for both dogs and cats. Microchips can be implanted during a routine appointment. The procedure is quick and relatively painless and, for puppies and kittens, is usually advised with second vaccinations. A microchip means that if your pet goes missing and is found and taken to another vets or a rescue centre, they can scan your pet and return them to you.
It is important to keep details up to date if you move house or change your phone number. To do this you need to contact your microchip provider. If your pet has been micro-chipped for a long time and you are unsure who to contact you can search the micro-chip number on a national database such as

One of the most heartbreaking part of being a pet owner is saying goodbye. Euthanasia is not an easy thing to talk or think about, but knowing what to expect during the appointment can make the whole experience a fraction less upsetting.
We are always available to discuss end of life care and to answer any questions you may have, and we understand how difficult these conversations are so please do not worry if you can’t discuss the subject without becoming emotional.

Surgical Treatments

Neutering is advised for cats and dogs from 6 months of age onwards. Until this age it is recommended to keep cats indoors to prevent unplanned pregnancies.
If you wish to discuss the benefits of neutering, or the best time to carry out the procedure, feel free to speak to one of our vets. We sometimes neuter dogs and cats earlier or later than six months for behavioural reasons so if you have any concerns, do get in touch.

We are committed to maintaining good oral health through preventative care where possible, and our team can advise on routine care for your pet’s teeth.
Most pets will require more significant dental treatment at some stage, and having the latest dental equipment allows us to offer a full range of procedures.
Treatment ranges from a routine scale and polish, during which plaque and calculus are removed and teeth cleaned, to multiple extractions should more advanced periodontal disease be present. All dentals are carried out under a full general anaesthetic.

The laboratory services available at the surgery are used to diagnose a range of conditions that might otherwise be very hard for us to identify.
Our in-house laboratory machines mean we can run comprehensive blood profiles and urinalysis and have the results available within hours.
We may recommend a blood test prior to surgery for older or unwell animals. This may flag up any underlying health conditions, and help us decide if your pet is fit enough to undergo a procedure.
Blood tests are also used as a routine tool to monitor an animal’s response to long-term medication.
For some less common conditions such as allergies, parasitic infections or histology, and for rabies antibody testing, we may send samples to external laboratories for analysis.

X-rays and ultrasound are regularly carried out on site aiding fast and accurate diagnosis. X-rays may be used to check for foreign bodies and bone injuries or abnormalities or as part of dental assessment and treatment.
Ultrasound allows three-dimensional visualisation of a pet’s internal anatomy, and can be used, sometimes in conjunction with X-rays, to assess organ function, detect tumours or fluid or determine pregnancy. -
Upon booking, a vet or another team member will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have. You will be given a time to drop off your pet and pre-operative information will be sent to you the day before. When you collect your pet we will go though any post-operative requirements, book you in for any check-ups that may be needed and provide you with written advice and instructions. We are always on hand to address any concerns you may have in the days before or following any procedures.

At Church Street Vets we are keen to provide holistic care for your pet. Whilst many of the problems we see are predominantly physical conditions, we are also on hand to help with any behavioural changes or challenges you may face with your pet. In some cases these may be connected to the physical symptoms your animal is displaying, in other cases behaviour changes may relate to life events or early life experience.
Behaviour problems can be complex and we may only be able to provide behavioural first aid in a routine consultation, however we are able to refer you on to a suitably qualified behaviourist should further help be needed, so if you have concerns about any aspect of your pet’s behaviour please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Our qualified veterinary nurses can offer advice on diet, dental hygiene, pre and post operative care and preventative treatments. They can carry out microchipping, second vaccinations, nail clips, post operative checks, health related grooming, and administer some forms of ongoing medication. Nurse appointment are usually offered early afternoon Monday to Wednesday.

We dispense the majority of our medications in house, but written prescriptions are available on request. The current charge for a written prescription is £18.
If you require either medication or a written prescription please allow up to 48 hours for us to carry out your request. Most of the medications that we use are available on prescription only. This means that the animal must be under our care and we must have seen the animal within the last 6 months. Some medication will require more frequent consultations or blood tests. We will tell you if this is the case for your pet.

Home visits may be available upon request. Visits are only possible for certain treatments and are arranged around the needs of the surgery. If you would like request a home visit for your pet, please get in touch.

We treat a wide variety of animals and conditions here at the surgery, however in some cases we may recommend specialist treatment. This may be for complex surgery such as orthopaedic procedures, for advanced medical conditions such as chemotherapy or radioactive iodine treatment or for complimentary therapies including hydrotherapy or behavioural consultations. We will discuss referral options with you, give an indication of the costs involved and initiate the referral process. In some cases a specialist may be able to see your pet here at the practice.

We are always on hand with information about insurance options for your pet and to help you navigate the claims process. We do not charge for the completion of insurance paperwork.

We understand that owning a pet can be expensive and aim to provide price transparency. Our price list displays the cost of most common treatments and surgeries. If you like pricing information for any other products or procedures, please do get in touch.
We also have our pet health subscription plan, Paws & People, to help spread the cost of routine care, and are happy to answer any questions you might have about pet insurance, which covers the unexpected costs of accidents and illness.
